Chapter Twenty-One

Rainy Day at the Beach

THE next day dawned overcast with low clouds and a light drizzle. While it might seem to be the definitively wrong weather for a beach weekend, it was actually a perfect beach day for Cole.

“I love rainy days at the beach,” Cole observed while standing at the window looking at the rain falling outside.

“Me too,” Marco responded. “My family always told me I was weird for liking rain at the beach. I can’t explain it, but it’s a nice thing.”

Cole and Marco had a low-key, relaxing, restful day. Marco really did have a paper to write for a class, so the rainy day was actually a godsend. In the morning he cooked a huge breakfast for the two of them and then settled down at the table with his books and notes spread everywhere and his laptop open in front of him.

Cole read, finally getting through more than a page a week (which admittedly made the story difficult to follow). After about ten pages, Cole found himself really getting into the story and remembering how much he enjoyed reading fiction. He wondered after he’d finished fifty pages why he’d ever stopped doing something that was so much fun.

At noontime Marco took a break to make lunch for the two of them. Since the rain had increased and the temperature had fallen, he took the opportunity to light a fire in the fireplace. They both laughed as Riley pushed past both of them to lie down in front of the fireplace.

“I think he likes it,” Marco whispered, as if Riley could tell what they were saying.

“Yes, I think he does. Actually, I think he’s glad to have some way to dry his fur. The last time I took him out to pee he got a little drenched. He never has been especially fond of the water.”

“I know. It can be especially hard to get him out for his walk on rainy days. I’ve always called him a water wuss.”

“Good term,” Cole agreed.

Throughout the afternoon Marco made steady headway on his writing, while Cole finished the novel he’d been reading. When he closed the book after reading the last page, he found himself smiling. He now understood why the book had received such rave reviews by everyone when it first came out a couple of years earlier. The story was wonderful, and Cole was so glad he’d finally had time to read it. The idea of reading a page or two before falling asleep each evening clearly wasn’t going to work. A rainy day at the beach in the company of a wonderful man was exactly what the doctor ordered.

That last thought, though, introduced a bit of a downer in Cole’s outlook because as great as this weekend had been—and it had been great—he knew what he wanted out of a relationship and what Marco wanted out of a relationship were most likely dramatically different things. For one, Cole wanted the other person in the relationship to have a penis, and he was quite sure Marco would be offended by that thought.
